Council of Governments

The Calaveras Council of Governments is our regional transportation planning agency.  Its name is usually shortened to "COG".  I have served on COG since my appointment to the City Council.  Transportation planning involves working with State and Federal highway and transit programs -- each with a blizzard of terms and abbreviations -- as they apply to County and City issues.

Wednesday night we dealt with the "Unmet Needs" report regarding the operation of the County bus system.  This report is required by the State in order for Calaveras to receive State transit dollars (a portion of the state sales tax).  There is a formal process required to develop the report.  COG staffer Tyler Summersett was recognized by a number of public and council members for conducting an outstanding series of community meetings and other outreach activities in producing the report.  For a normal COG meeting, there was a very large number of public speakers who addressed the Council in support of the bus service.  I continue to be a strong supporter of the bus system, especially during these rough economic times providing mobility options to everyone is critical.

Another important step in improving local mobility was taken with the COG's approval of the contract to start the work on the Wagon Trail project.  The realignment of the unimproved 5 mile stretch between Copperopolis and  Angels Camp will improve safety while maintaining the rural character of Highway 4.  The project includes extensive opportunities for community participation in every stage of its development.  Keep an eye open for your chance to participate.
